On Saturday, May 24th, the Manitou Opera House marked a major milestone with the launch of its brand-new Endowment Fund in partnership with the Pembina-Manitou Area Foundation (PMAF). To kick things off, a special concert featuring the Brandon-based cover band 43 Collective helped raise over $43,000 in seed money — a fitting total for a band with "43" in the name!
The fund will provide long-term support for the Opera House, with annual interest going toward operational costs, ensuring the venue remains a vital part of the local arts and culture scene for generations to come.
The idea for the endowment was brought forward by PMAF treasurer Lorne Schultz, and it quickly gained momentum. Together with MOHF board events chair Lindy Sharpe, the pair reached out to local businesses and individuals to support the cause. Donations of $1,000 or more received charitable tax receipts, recognition on the Opera House donor board, and ten invitations to the fundraising concert.
The event exceeded all expectations. Just before the band took the stage, Sharpe shared that they had already raised $42,165. Then, in a heartwarming turn, an anonymous donor stepped in at intermission to top up the total to an even $43,000.
Even the band’s performance fee was covered by a donor, highlighting the community’s deep-rooted love and support for the arts. And what a performance it was — 43 Collective took the audience on a high-energy musical journey through the decades, from iconic tracks like the Beatles’ Come Together to crowd-pleasing anthems that had everyone dancing in their seats. With band members Kelsen McLean (drums), Braden Compton (guitar), and Jackson Hacault (keys/keytar) all having local ties, the hometown crowd was especially energized. Other band members included Kristen Nerbas (vocals), Brody Palmer (guitar), and Colby Ryznar (bass).
The evening was not just a fundraiser — it was a celebration of community spirit, live music, and the enduring importance of the Manitou Opera House.
